As we age, our face is not the only area that needs rejuvenation. Often the focus of treatment is solely on the face leaving the neck area untreated and begins to develop horizontal creases.

Neck creases, though they’re a natural part of ageing, can be detrimental to your appearance. The visible wrinkles and skin laxity can make us think twice about the clothes we choose to wear.

But thankfully, at Celevenus, we can help you bring back a more youthful neck appearance. Discover the available treatments for neck creases here.

    What are neck creases/lines?

Neck creases can appear as a part of the natural ageing process. They’re defined by wrinkles and sagging skin due to a loss of elasticity. The main cause for this issue is that natural skin cell turnover and collagen production deplete as we age.

These ageing wrinkles usually appear horizontally to your neck. However, you may also find another type of wrinkle, which appears as vertical neck creases.

    What causes neck creases/lines?

The causes for neck creases are the same as factors causing other types of wrinkles. But many of us overlook the neck when it comes to proper skincare, leaving this area more likely to develop ageing wrinkles.

Here are some of the main factors that cause neck creases:

    Sun damage

Sunscreen blocks UV rays, but only in the places where it’s applied.  Failing to apply sunscreen on the neck results in a breakdown of collagen and elastin, and the formation of horizontal lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.

    Thin skin

Neck skin is thin, which means it doesn’t have the healing capacity of the skin on other parts of the body. Wrinkles can set in on the neck skin easily.

Being overweight or obese is also one of the leading causes of having creases/lines across the neck. Excess buildup of fat layer below your chin will create neck fat rolls which lead to deep set horizontal neck lines.

If you come from a line of people who wrinkle early or easily, you may be prone to developing horizontal neck lines at an early age.

    Unhealthy diet

An unhealthy diet, consisting of ultra-processed food, packaged snacks, and sugary beverages. Insufficient fruits and veggies can also be the leading factor of ageing neck wrinkles.

    Skin dehydration

Wrinkles love dry skin. If you’re not prioritising neck moisturisation the way you do your face, horizontal neck lines may set in earlier and be more pronounced.

    Repeated motions

Just as repeated facial expressions cause wrinkles on the face, repeated motions of the neck can also cause horizontal neck lines.  This is where your phone becomes part of the problem. When you spend a lot of time looking down at your phone, you’re at risk of creating those unsightly neck bands that have earned the nickname, “Text Neck.”

    How to treat neck creases/lines?

Don’t stress about the neck creases or lines that already appear on your neck, as there are ways to treat them and improve their appearance.

    Collagen stimulator

As one of the main causes of neck creases is collagen deficiency, collagen stimulator acts to boost natural collagen production, thus improving skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of neck creases or lines.

One of the collagen stimulators available is Sculptra. Sculptra contains Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible synthetic substance that stimulates collagen production. It’s approved by the FDA for restoration and/or correction of the signs of volume loss.

    How does Sculptra work?

The biocompatible Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) will stimulate the body’s own production of collagen and elastin for long lasting and natural looking results.

Once injected, Sculptra allows your skin to gradually rebuild and replenish lost volume over a period of 4 to 8 weeks. The treatment is performed as a series of 3 treatments separated 6 to 8 weeks apart.  In clinical study, the effects lasted for more than 2 years after patients completed the recommended number of sessions.

One of the key benefits of Sculptra is its ability to provide subtle yet noticeable enhancement, avoiding the ‘overfilled’ or ‘done’ look that some people may want to avoid.  Patients often appreciate that the results develop over time, allowing for a natural transition and rejuvenation of their facial features.

    RF Microneedling

Aside from using Sculptra for neck creases, RF (radio frequency) Microneedling can also be used to treat neck creases. The RF energy, combined with microneedling technique, helps to stimulate collagen and elastin production.

An example of RF microneedling device is Intracel Microneedling. It’s used for treating a variety of skin concerns, including wrinkles, skin laxity, enlarged pores, acne scars and stretch marks. It’s also safe for all skin tones and involves minimal downtime, making it a popular choice for those seeking to improve their skin appearance.

    How does Intracel Microneedling work?

Intracel Microneedling is a non-surgical treatment that combines microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy to enhance skin rejuvenation. Here’s the breakdown of what the treatment entails:

    1. Microneedling – This part of the treatment involves using fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin.  These tiny punctures trigger the body’s natural healing process, which includes the production of collagen and elastin.
    1. Radiofrequency (RF) Energy – As the microneedles penetrate the skin, they also deliver RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin.  This heat energy helps to tighten existing collagen fibres and stimulates the production of new collagen.
    1. Collagen Production – The combination of microneedling and RF energy boosts the body’s collagen production, leading to firmer, smoother, and more youthful looking skin over time.

This treatment typically requires a series of sessions and can expect to have continuous improvement for up to 6 months. Patients often notice some immediate tightening, but the full benefits are usually seen 3 to 6 months later as the collagen production ramps up.

    Botulinum Toxin Injections

Botulinum toxin is a medical treatment used to improve the appearance of the neck.  Here’s a bit more detail about this treatment:

    • What it does – It temporarily relaxes specific neck muscles, which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and give the neck a smoother look.
    • How it works – The toxin blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles.  This means the injected muscle can’t contract (tighten) as forcefully, which makes wrinkles relax and soften.
    • Duration – The effects usually last about 4 to 6 months.  After that, you’d need another treatment to maintain the results.
