Hyperpigmentation & Uneven Skin Tone
WHAT IS HYPERPIGMENTATION?
Pigmentation means colouring. Uneven pigmentation of the skin is a common skin condition. Some areas of the skin appear darker in colour than the surrounding area, is called hyperpigmentation. These dark patches on the skin are known as age spots or sunspots. Melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are also considered as skin conditions.
Hyperpigmentation can be caused by inflammation, sun exposure, hormonal stress, genetic factors or other skin injuries. People with darker skin tone are normally more affected by hyperpigmentation marks than those with a fairer skin tone as skin pigmentation is stronger in dark skin.
Treating stubborn hyperpigmentation concerns is a long and difficult process. It is important to keep in mind that there is no quick fix. It needs time, patience, and compliance with the daily program over weeks.
TYPES OF PIGMENTATION
- Melasma is pigmentation concentrated across the cheeks and nose and is generally due to hormone imbalances and can be caused by medication or sun exposure during pregnancy.
- Lenitgo also known as ‘age spots’ are due mainly to the intrinsic ageing of the skin
- Solar Lentigo is caused by considerable, regular UV exposure
- Freckles are clusters of concentrated melanin. Although freckles are genetic, they are triggered by exposure to sunlight
- Post-inflammatory pigmentation occurs following acne and is due to excess melanin caused by inflammation
